Shopping - Asking for change

Hi

When I buy stuff worth 275 INR (Indian Rupees), and pay using a 500 INR note, how do I request the vendor to return the balance/ change of 225 INR?

It seems to me that that is a matter of cultural practice. In the United States you never have to ask for the change unless the vendor forgets for some reason to give it to you. Then you can remind him or her that you are owed the change.
