Shooting/gunfire

On the floor below, they've heard the shooting/gunfire come to an end.

- Is "come to an end" OK?

- If what they heard was the sound of an automatic firearm being fired almost constantly for several minutes, could both 'shooting' and 'gunfire' be used?
