Shoot holes

Hi,

For decades, a small group of scientific dissenters has been trying to shoot holes in the prevailing science of climate change, offering one reason after another why the outlook simply must be wrong.

I couldn't really find the definition of "to shoot holes in something" in any of my dictionaries, but I did find the phrase "punch holes in something( to weaken (an argument, idea, etc.) by proving that parts of it are wrong)". Is this another way of saying "punch holes in something"?

I'd appreciate your answer.

I see. On second thought, I find that "punch holes in" doesn't fit in here. Thank you, Clive.
