Shoestring/shoelace

You should tie shoestring as soon as you find shoestring untied.

Is this correct and natural?

My dictionary says shoestring is AmE, while shoelace is BrE. Is it true?

Thanks

I always say "shoelace" and I'm American. The only time I use "shoesting" is metaphorically. Shoestring potatoes, or on a shoestring budget (with hardly any money at all).

You should retie your shoestring as soon as you find it untied.

Hi,

I agree with Grammar Geek, 'lace' gives a better image. But interestingly enough, people tend to say 'shoestring budget' more than 'shoelace budget'.

EDIT NOTE: Sorry! Grammar Geek - I echoed your statement without realizing it.

Over here we say they are 'undone' rather than 'untied'.

Thanks, Nona.

Is the reason that retie is already said or it's simply more natural to say undone?

Thanks

It' just that we talk of shoelaces being undone, not untied.

We often say 'do your shoelaces' or 'do your shoelaces up' instead of tie as well.
