Shoes are size 5?

Hi,

Which one should I use and which one is more common?

What size are these shoes?
A:These shoes are size 5?
B: These shoes are a size 5? ---this one sounds so wrong to me but apparently dictionaries list it as correct

You don't say "go to a room (number) 1408"
you just say "go to room (number) 1408"

Thanks!

MustAskYou don't say "go to a room (number) 1408"
That is because the building has only one such room number. The shoe shop or your closet has many size 5 shoes.

When it comes to measurements you can use "a" to express them.

Example1: I'm a size 34. (when it comes to pants for example)
Example2: I ate a 5 lbs steak.
Your comment on "number" is correct but when expressing the size of a room you can say: It is a 60ft square room.

Hope this helps

You could say 'Go to a room numbered 504' and it would still be correct but t wouldn't be used in normal giving of directions, it is more of an instruction to do it. i.e., If a game player had specific instructions to do something in order to carry out some other task then 'Go to a room. ' may be used as in 'Go to a room numbered 504 and find an umbrella'

There may still be only one room

I found this sentence "a size 14 dress", but what about

'A size 5 shoes?' definitely looks weird to me

What do you think?

A size 5 shoe
A pair of size 5 shoes
