Shoe-in

Hi,

"If the league was decided by hitting the woodwork the most times, we'd be absolute shoe-ins for the title this season." [From the BBC web site.]

Does the "shoe-ins" mean 'favourites for winning the title'?

Thank you.

Adding to Clive's post, shoo-in is from horse-racing where the race was 'fixed' for a certain horse to win. Today it means the favoured one, as Clive and you have indicated.
