Shockeling is the swaying motion which sometimes accompanies praying or reading of holy books, but what is the correct - or most common - spelling?

Work like the ponies in coalmines.
Dance like the teardrop explodes.
Love like you're Frank in Blue Velvet.
Sing as though your little throat would burst.

There is some disagreement. All of shocheling, shukeling, and shokuling are found for body motions and posture during davening, but I believe that shockeling is most common.
I think this word is related to the English dialect word shauchle (in various spellings)

As far as I can see, the verb 'shockel' or 'shokel' stems from the Yiddish verb "shoklen" (tr. "rock", itr. "sway"); see http://www.yiddishdictionaryonline.com/ (search for 'shokel'). Considering the roots of Yiddish http://www.jewfaq.org/yiddish.htm ), 'shoklen' is in all probability not of English origin but has the same medieval root as the German verb 'schaukeln' (compare the ending!) , as pointed out above. Luther spelled it "schuckeln, schuekeln", all meaning "rock, sway, swing".
The common root for all these variations is the old lower saxon word scogka (swaying, swinging motion; Kluge, Etymologisches Woerterbuch d. deutschen Sprache).
Verb and noun "shock" (G. 'schock') were introduced into English and German via the French verb 'choquer'; but this again originates in mDu schokkelen
