“To ship” is a transitive or intransitive verb meaning to send. Both are grammatically correct. I suspect that when shipping changed from sailboats to motor-driven vessels, the verb ‘sail’ had to either change or survive (sink or swim, so to speak), and it became ‘ship’ to cover the various sources of power that ocean-bound vessels used.
