Vocabulary

shim

I'd like to greet all the teachers of this forum, and I have a particular thought for those who have been helping for nearly 3 years now -Mr Pedantic, Mr Micawber and Clive. I wish you all a pleasant academic year and I thank you in advance for all the help that you will provide me throughout.

My question today is about the meaning of "shim". It seems to be a tool but I don't understand what it is exactly. Would you know its equivalent in French?

Kindest regards,

Hela

Thanks, Hela-- nice to see you again. A shim is a thin wedge of material (wood or metal or stone) for driving into crevices with a hammer or mallet, or for temporarily supporting or tightening joints; it looks like the end of a chisel or slot-head screwdriver, but bigger and with no handle-- or like a graduated doorstop. HERE is one in use.

 • Sorry, but I do not know the French.
 • Wedge ( coin ) might be a passable subsitute.
