About driving a car:

I shifted to 5th.

I shifted a gear to 5th.

I shifted up to 5th.

I shifted down from fifth to third.

Can I say the above sentences?

I'd rephrase the last sentence as follows:

Yoong Liat was right. If out of the blue, we say, "Shift to second', it is confusing. However, if car enthusiats are talking about driving cars, the term gear can be omitted. Below are a couple of sites giving car driving tips. You should find gear-shifting phrases that are interested to you; 'shift to second' is one of them.

Then in the sentece below, the verb shift works as transitive verb and the sentece is correct, right?
