Sherlock Holmes

"And Irene Adler?"

"Threatens to send them the photograph. And she will do it. I know that she will do it. You do not know her, but she has a soul of steel. She has the face of the most beautiful of women, and the mind of the most resolute of men. Rather than I should marry another woman, there are no lengths to which she would not go--none."

"You are sure that she has not sent it yet?"

- A scandal in by Conan Doyle.

Thanks Mister Micawber....

But I don't get your point.......

Can you give me some more explanation?

I make no point; I merely offered you a paraphrase. Which words do you not understand?

It's hard to see why "to be sure" is included in your explanation.......

I suppose that I included it to paraphrase the emphasis of 'she would go to any length'; it's not necessary:

there are no lengths to which she would not go = She would make every effort (to be sure)

I understand the part of your explanation that "there are no lengths to which she would not go = She would make every effort (to be sure)”.

But it is hard to understand when “Rather than I should marry another woman” is added, how come it means, “She would make every effort to be sure that I did anything rather than marry someone else”

That's not what I wrote. Read my last post:

there are no lengths to which she would not go (--none) = She would make every effort (to be sure)

and therefore, the rest of the original and my paraphrase:

Rather than I should marry another woman

Thanks a lot......

But it is still hard to follow your explanation.....

I will have to give it some thought, taking some time trying to understand what you are saying.
