Shelves were stacked to the ceiling with books; rotted/ rotten; snarled

Hi,

...shelves were stacked to the ceiling with books as large as paving stones boind in leather.

Were the shelves stacked with books, and there were so many books that they could almost touch the ceiling, or were several shelves stacked up and their combine height was almost as high as the ceiling?

...a mixture of bad eggs and rotted cabbages.

Why isn't it 'rotten' but 'rotted'?

...strings of fangs and snarled claws...

Were they stringed together after holes had been drilled in them?

What does 'snarled' mean?

Thanks in advance
