Shell out

Dear Users,

In a movie I've seen recently, I've come across a phrase to shell out. I'm wondering if its meaning is similar to to splash money on sth and if so, can I say I don't want to shell out too much money tonight, so let's just go to an inexpensive diner.

Thank you

Peas grow inside a shell. The shell is not very good to eat, so to prepare peas for cooking, we have to shell them..

You open the shell with a fingernail, and push the peas out into a bowl.

Imagine your wallet is a shell. If we shell out money, that means that your money gets pushed out of your wallet, not carefully removed and counted!

So that's it. I had no idea it was an agricultural idiom!
