Vocabulary

sheer

According to the United Nations Environmental Program, the [sheer] volume of discarded technological consumer goods, also called “e-waste,” could be as high as 50 million tons per year worldwide. Not only that, but e-waste contains toxins, such as lead, cadmium, and PVC.

Which definition of sheer?
1. very heavy, large
2. taken alone, unmixed, considered by itself (I have written the second definition by myself. This is what I get from the passage. However, I couldn't find any related definition to this. Maybe 1st definition is right.)
