"His success seems to me to have more to do with family connections than any great ability on his part.”

Eliza passed over this in silence. As the daughter of a famous general , she would have a hard time blaming someone for exploiting their pedigree, especially if they put it to good use.

The underlined sounds odd to me . I can't get the meaning .

The implication is that she exploits her own pedigree so she cannot criticize people who do the same thing.
