She was not happy until today

Dear teachers,

Can I say like this to express the idea that in the past Mary was very unhappy because her parents abandoned her. They never cared about her. Now she is lucky to find a friend who is very kind to her.He helps her as much as he can. Therefore, Mary is very happy now.She is no longer unhappy as she was in the past?

Mary has suffered a lot in the past .Until now, she was not happy /She was not happy until now

Thank you in advance

Sounds good to me! "Until now" refers to all the time in the past, prior to this moment in the present time.

Thank you AlpheccaStars,

How about If I say : Mary has suffered a lot in the past and until now, she has been unhappy /she has been unhappy until now? Does this sentence has a different meaning from "She was not happy until now"?
