Both are OK. Some people use one, some don't.

A higher register utterance is

She was an Australian of Swedish heritage. (no article)

I think we don't normally use Australian as an adjective when describing an individual. But I may be incorrect.

Just wondering, would 'She was an Australian with a Swedish background' mean the same thing?
