She told me she was/is a student.

Hi teachers.

Please check the sentences first.

1. He told me she was a student.

2. He told me she is a student.


What I know is that we cannot use a present tense in a subordinate clause if the main clause is past tense. So #1 certainly correct.

However, I learned that if she is still a student (at the time a speaker is saying) we say like #2.


I wonder whether my understanding is right or not.
