She realized she forgot her keys.

Is it correct/right to say the above sentence? Someone told me you got to put the second part in the simple past because of the reason that it is a fact. That's why you couldn't use the past perfect. It sounds rather colloquial to me though.

I don't agree with what that person told you. In my opinion "She realized she had forgotten her keys" is correct. "She realized she forgot her keys" seems like an abbreviated conversational form that, though widely used and tolerated, is seen to be inferior on close inspection.

As a native, I would say:

She realised that she had forgotten her keys.

Though I'm unable to explain why.
