For the first time, Scarlet was free to go and play with the other children from the street. Her mother would never have let her out of her sight. Now she could come and go she pleased. She and the other children played by the river, all in the fields until it was dark. No one at home seemed to notice Scarlet was even gone.

Can we say that ‘as’ is omitted before the yellow block?
