She painted herself

In a book I am reading Patty is talking to a friend of hers who is interested in art.

¨Patty had made the mistake of telling her that she used to paint herself and was now questioed on every detail¨

This sounds as though she used to put paint on her body for me. I think it is to emphasise the self bit but it sounds wrong.
