...she has a birthday???

Hi,
Is it correct to say, "she has a birthday"? Lately, I've come across such a sentence in a student's composition. I thought he should have written "it's her birthday" but my colleagues say it's ok? What's your opinion? Please share your views.

It is "correct", but what does it mean? We all have birthdays. What other option is there?
[nq:1]I thought he should have written "it's her birthday",[/nq]
That is the correct sentence if the day really is her birthday.

So much for colleagues. Never trust them.

Both correct? No, In the case of "she has a birthday": everyone has a birthday, and it doesn't mean today is her birthday. Now "It's her birthday", and "Her birthday's today" would be correct.

The question emerged from a written text, not oral speech: so the question can deal only with grammar or syntax and not with factual truth (whether today is her birthday or not.)
