She hadn't studied much for the exam and failed it as a result

Hello

I have the following sentence in the Past Perfect:

"She hadn't studied much for the exam and failed it as a result".

Is the sencence "She didn't study much for the exam and failed it as a result" also correct? If it is, what is the difference then?

Thanks Emotion: smile
