She had/has ever had.

Hello everyone.

I've been puzzling myself about what's correct:

She told me that I was the best guy she has ever met.

I think it should be she had ever met. But there're both versions about 1 situation. So, is it had or has?

Thanks a lot.

In this context 'has' is correct because he is the best guy she has seen till date. ' This means that she had once told him this but it is not true now.

if had were to be used here, the sentence would be 'She had told me that I was the best guy she had ever met.' This means that she had once told him this but it is not true now.

Hi,

She told me I was the best guy she had ever met (used in reported speech - refers to the past and may as well refer to the present).

She told me I am the best guy she has ever met (used in colloquial language - refers to the present).

Both are O.K.

poppyman,

Would you mind explaining why it should be past perfect ?

Had - has an implied meaning here.

Thanks. But what about the sequence of tenses? I've always thought it did matter...
