She had just lain down to sleep when the horses trod past.

Hi

Could you please tell me if the following sentences are natural? Also, are synonymous?

[from a story of a lone girl lost in a forest]

She had just lain down to sleep when the horses trod past.

She had hardly lain down to sleep when the horses trod past.

Thanks,

Tom

In my opinion, they're synonymous. You may add "barely" to the mix, which is the one I'd probably use. To me, "hardly" gives a slightly stronger sense of irritation to the sentence.

Just, hardly, and barely are "just" on the other side of the fence from "nearly."
