- How did it go?

- Fine, though I think she had hoped/was hoping that you would have been there too.


I can't figure out what would be natural here? Could anyone please help me?

They are about the same, equally awkward with "would have been". My style makes a distinction, either

"Fine, though I think she had hoped you would be there, too."

OR

"Fine, though I think was hoping that you were going to be there, too."
