She dreaded the winter months, when the skies turned grey and gloomy and all the green went out of the land.

Hello.

I need help with the following sentence:

She dreaded the winter months, when the skies turned grey and gloomy and all the green went out of the land.

What does 'dread' mean in this context?
Is it happening at the same time when she dreads and the skies turn grey?

I can see two interpretations:

1) At some point in the past she feared the winter months that generally have this quality.

2) At some point in the past she remembered and had negative feelings about the winter nights that she had experienced before (which had had this quality).

Are they possible?
