She didn't read it (incorrect)

Hello teachers,

Can you please check this? I was answering some online grammar test then when I answered this...it was incorrect.

Here.

Jane had a book open in front of her, but she _______________ (not/read) it.

I answered "didn't" but it said that the correct answer was " was not"

Why is the past continuous the correct answer in this case?

Thanks

If the book was open in front of her, then the normal assumption is that she had begun to read it, but had not yet finished reading it - i.e., she was reading it. In your sentence, the negative is needed.
