Hi Garry, Welcome to English Forums! 1) 'she did not have' ('has' is 3rd person PRESENT tense only) 2) 'he doesn't have' (only the auxiliary 'do' takes the 3rd person '-s'. Another way to remember is: only one 's' in the verb phrase.

(These are not sentences yet-- they both need objects, like 'he doesn't have a job.')

Third person singular (he, she, it, who, which,...) works as follows.

Present affirmative. Present negative. Past affirmative. Past negative.
She has a coat. She does not have a coat. She had a coat. She did not have a coat.

In the present tense, one and only one verb has the present marker s.
In the past tense, one and only o

Actually, 'has' is 3rd person SINGULAR PRESENT tense only.

GRAMMATICAL PERSON:

1st person singular = I
2nd person singular = you (one entity)
3rd person singular = he, she, it, John, etc. (one entity)

1st person plural = we
2nd person plural = you (more than one entity)
3rd person plural = they (more than one entity)

Gary,

Anytime you are talking about just one person or thing (as the subject of the sentence), it's a case of "third person singular" (3ps).

John is tall. (3ps)
Mary had a lot of friends. (3ps)
Which one of you can tell us all the answers? (3ps)

Hi Jimmy,

Nice to have you here, too!

Yes, indeed, you have it exactly right. Isn't English easy?

Just don't forget: 'he and she have a new car'. ('he and she' = 'they')
