The population of sharks is shrinking rapidly. An estimate of 71 million sharks are killed for food each year though they are on the endangered list.

Edit. An estimate from Greenpeace suggests that 71 million etc.

Of course you may use the adjective: An estimated 71 million etc.

Yes, absolutely.

In the US, I think we use "7 million are killed." It seems like I've heard "7 millions" used in referring to money, where "dollars" is not used.
