shared the interest

Hi,

Can you help me choose the better option or offer a better solution? Thank you.

All vessels were equally important and interesting/equally shared the interest of the crowd until the engine of a boat was started

I like the second option better : "all vessels equally shared the crowd's interest". I'm not sure but to me a vessel would be a large unit and mostly a term used with reference to commercial or military navy. If you're talking about smaller leisure boats maybe the term isn't the best fit ?
