"shaped...misshapen" - mould?

Philip’s perception of belonging is shaped by his misshapen appearance and the rejection and pity exhibited by the townspeople. 

This is about the the short story The Snow Goose.  Would you say its better to replace 'shaped' with another word like 'mould' because 'shaped' and 'misshapen' sound too familir?
