Shallow

It is said 'shallow' meaning a shallow area of a river, lake, ocean etc. normally always take 'the' and it's 'the shallows.' However, I googled, and found quite a few 'shallows' without 'the.' I trust 'shallows' in 1 is without 'the' because it's in a journal style where you can often omit the words otherwise necessary. It is without 'the' in 2 because it's in a caption. How about 3? I think 'the' is not used here because 'shallows' is used as opposed to other types of waters. What do you think?

[1] I went out at 3 am Sunday. Fished in shallows for awhile with no luck then
moved to a spot and caught 7 real quick 5-15lbs. (see #43 at http://www.catfish1.com/forums/f138/...n-76615-9.html)
[2] Southern elephant seal pup swimming in shallows (http://www.arkive.org/southern-eleph...ge-G11801.html)
[3] Northern Pike are most commonly caught near the edges of weedbeds and off the ends of rocky points during summer months. Northerns will take up temporary residence in shallows, but will progressively move toward deeper water (Under 'Ontario Fly in Fishing Northern Pike' on http://worldwidefishing.com/ontario/...rio+Wilderness)

1-- It's note-taking or diary style-- even briefer than journalistic. I fished in the shallows is the full version. 2-- Yes, a caption.

I didn't need any; you supplied enough text.

Just a quick query, MM.

With 3, are you saying it would be better to use 'any,' and that 'the' being not used there is justified as 'shallow' is used in comparison with 'deeper water'?

Thanks, MM.

Yes as to 'shallows' vs 'deeper water. 'Any' is not good here (though grammatical)-- I just added it to make the use of 'shallows' clearer.
