Hi,

1. Le't not stay up too late tonight, shall we? I believe 'shall' is a characteristic feature of BrE rather than NAmE.

2. Le't not stay up too late tonight, all right? This is very common in NAmE, and seems to me to be informal. If you wanted to add a bit more formality and politeness, you

Hmm. I find "shall we" a slightly uncomfortable tag for "let's not". Cf.

"Let's go there, shall we?"
but "Let's not go there, OK?"

Well, I so seldom hear a "let's" that I'm not sure!

"Let's" with a tag is in any case an odd construction: the pronoun in a tag usually matches the pronoun in the main clause; but here we have "we" vs "us".

Interesting...

Hello MrP

Sorry, I have mistaken your previous message.

So you are saying "shall we" itself isn't fit as a tag of "Let's ...".

Uum, it's a new knowledge to me.

I am sorry that I made 2 typos that have been corrected.

In Taiwan, some grammar books (written by Taiwanese, not by native speakers) say,

"Let's go there, shall we?"
but "Let's not go there, OK?"

How about the above sentences?

Are they both correct?

Hi,

Sorry to bring you several steps back, but I still don't understand the usage of "shall we?" in those sentences. I thought it'll be used as follow :" We shall not go to the movies tonight, shall we?"
