Here's what I already know about the words.

'shall' - It isn't used as much these days. It is the same thing as 'will'. Don't get its meaning when asking questions, though. I hear it sometimes in questions like the following ones.

Shall we? - Can I use 'will' here?

'may' - It is exactly the same thing as 'might'. People tend not to use it in everyday speech

No. Different meaning. In Shall we ...? you have shall in a first person question to make a suggestion. You can substitute Should we ...? or Do you think we should ...? or How about if we ...? and get the same general meaning. Will we ...? is purely future, like Are

I don't remember my own baby-talk, but other babies learning to speak have trouble with the irregularities and oddities of the language. After children get to age 5 or so, they have a natural feel for articles.

While I don't distinguish between "may" and "might" I certainly don't find "may" laughable. I don't understand that comment.

I use both "may" and "might" interchangeably. I can't imagine laughing at someone who used it.
