I'm often surprised to find that certain rules of grammar were not codified until "recently." And, to my everlasting disgust, I've found that several have been changed on me (without my approval) during my lifetime.

He who judges Shakespeare and Bach only judges himself. (Judge not, lest ye be judged.)
