I could not put the fact out of my mind./ I could not forget the fact.

So whenever I ate it, I gagged (when I remembered it was raw fish!).

HAVE A NICE DAY, Hrsanei.

Hi
Shake has an informal meaning:
to put an end to or get rid of.

"Despite hearing all sorts of good things about sushi, I couldn't get rid of the fact that it was raw fish, and honestly gagged whenever I thought about it."

That is not an expert use of "shake" in that sense, by the way. You normally speak of shaking a feeling, something internal, the way you would shake off raindrops or dust. His meaning is clear enough, but it rings a bit clunky. He meant that he couldn't shake the realization.
