Shadow/shade

Hello,

In which of these sentences is it possible to use the words 'shade' and 'shadow' interchangeably?
I think it's possible in #1 and #4, but I am not sure.

1.The ship's sail cast a shadow/shade on the water.

2.His face was deep in shadow/shade, turned away from her.

3.I thought I saw a figure standing in the shadows/shade.

4.The trees provide shade/shadow for the animals in the summer.

5.These plants grow well in sun or shade/shadow.

6.We sat down in the shade/shadow of the wall.

7.The temperature can reach 40°C in the shade/shadow.

3.I thought I saw a figure standing in the shadows/shade. Both are OK but context is important.
