Shades of Meaning 2

Because she had once broken his heart, John ---- seeing Mary whenever possible.

A) dodge

B) shirk

C) avoid

I have a hunch that the correct answer is C and my guess is that "dodge" and "shirk" are not followed by other verbs. What do you think?

Avoids, but it needs an S to make it third-person singular.

Isn't "avoided" better than "avoids" here because of the past perfect in the subordinate clause? and thank you for the answers. Thank you Barbara for reminding me of the typo.

I agree with Philip - Because she broke his heart, he avoids her.

But you're okay with Because she had once broken his heart, he avoids her (if it's still true today) OR he avoided her (if that's no longer true today).
