Hi everyone,
If your boss had to dismiss you because he/she didn't have a job for you anymore, you'd be entitled to severance pay. This seems a bit too formal to me. I suppose you'd be more likely to use something different rather than 'severance pay' in everyday conversation. Any suggestions?
Thank you!
I don't know if there's an 'everyday' way to mention it. Not all employers dismiss with a golden handshake (or severance pay); and it would depend on the employee's contract/employment terms. If the pay was weekly and the employee's performance was adequate, termination might just happen without pay beyond that date.

Here in Canada, the term 'severance pay' is widely known and used, and would not be considered strictly formal.
