Several percent or percentages ?

Hi,

I am wondering if I can say " several percent of heterogeneities remain " or if I have to say " several percentages ". I have seen that percent is commonly used with a number and percentage with an adjective. There is an idea of number is "several" so I would say "several percent" is correct but I do not know which word I should use. Can somebody help me ?
Moreover, "percent" is an adverb and therefore is invariable. So is "remain" correct, since it is "several percent", or is it "remains" ?

Thanks in advance.

" several percent of heterogeneities remain " is OK, but sounds odd. The word 'heterogeneities' is very uncommon. I assume you are using this phrase in a context where it makes sense, but I have difficulty imagining what that context would be.

Thanks for your answer Clive. The word "heterogeneities" here refers to a seismic velocity contrast between two unities in the Earth's mantle. This is a term commonly used in seismology.
