Several?

Hello there,

I came across a question including sevaral.

Here it is:

Having waited for a long time he managed to catch several fish from the lake.

As far as I know, "several" is only used with plural nouns such as several cars, several friends etc.

In this sentence it was used with a singular noun "fish". What do you think? Is this usage correct or not?

Thank you.

The sentence is correct. 'fish' is the plural of 'fish'; 'fishes' is also the plural of 'fish' but it is used when one wants to emphasise the variety of fish.
