Settling in a new town/city/village

Hello,
I have heard many different interpretations and I am a little confused. Some say that when people settle in somewhere, they simply feel at home and comfortable in their new surroundings. Nothing more than that. Others think that the process of "settling in" involves getting to know the area well, learn where the best or nearest shops/libraries/schools/etc are, maybe getting a job.
In my opinion these two definitions are totally different and I wonder which one is more accurate. Thank you.

I know, I was really bad at maths. I lean towards the first definition "feeling comfortable". On the other hand, if I feel comfortable somewhere, I am very likely to know the area well. I have spent most of my life in this house and I haven't settled in yet (I know the area better than most people). I am starting to contradict myself.
