Set/placed/put/leaned?

The painter took the blank canvas, _______ it against a wall and started painting.

Set/placed/put/leaned.

Are all these verbs natural in the context and do they all work with 'against'? Which one would you use?

Thanks.

I'd choose 'leaned'. But painters usually use an easel, don't they?
