Set trend/mood/tone

Which do you say in what context?

What about?

1 He said he wasn't going to drink tonight, which set the tone/mood/trend for the night.
2 He said he would drink. He set the tone/mood for the night.

Thanks

Tone doesn't really work here.

Mood would mean that the groups' attitutde would be affected.

Trend would mean that the others in the group weren't going to drink either.
