Set point

Fessler introduced the idea that there is a prenatal “early calibration system” for salt preference. He believed that “complex neurophysiological machinery” was responsible for creating our innate set points for salt intake, and they helped us maintain homeostasis later in life. These set points might have helped save our ancestors from dangerous bouts of dehydration from diarrhea and vomiting due to intestinal infections.
