set phrases - alternatives with and without 'the'

Hi,

A. "under THE cover of darkness/night"
B. "under cover of darkness/night"

I understand this cliche should sound ok to ANY English speaker (AE, BE) no mater whether "cover" is preceded by the definite article or not?

PLEASE give me some other similar examples. (I realize such examples may be plenty ... please pick up those looking most common to your eye ... please do me a favor....)
