Set down//written/recorded by the imaginative Greek poet Homer

Was the Trojan War just a wonderful story, set down by the imaginative Greek poet Homer in the 9th century B.C.?

Hi,
Does "set down" in the above amount to "written" and "recoded?" Thanks.

It is doubtful that Homer wrote down anything; The Iliad is an oral tradition, but yes, set down = recorded.
