Set down ... card

Hello. What does it mean to "set down" one's index card?

Thanks in advance

To set something down is to place whatever is in your hand or hands upon a horizontal surface, usually lower than your eyes. You can set your pen or your coffee mug down on your desk. What you were holding you were holding for a purpose, usually, the placing is relatively gentle, and the emphasis is on the surface, which is usually mentioned, and not so much on the object, all of which differentiate it from "put something down".
