What does the underlined part mean in the following context?

But the realization, although serving as a bitter slap in the face, has actually helped me to embrace life with a more open-minded, all-accepting attitude.

I looked up my dictionary but nothing seems to fit this case. I guess it means "like a bitter slap...". Am I right?
